Are you feeling angry, sluggish, miserable and depressed? Not having a good day? Don’t worry, you are not alone – been there, done that! Everyone has their bad days. But the most important question here is – how do you handle your bad day and turn into a positive and productive one?
So, I started doing some research and listening to videos on how to be joyful, even on a bad day. Not that I don’t know how to be happy. Obviously things like shopping, holidaying and catching up with friends definitely make me happy! Yes, they do to a certain extent but what I really discovered is that it is enormously important for us to be content within ourselves before even resorting to external things in search of happiness.
“Joy is not about what you do and what you do not do. Joy is about how you are within yourself”, Sadhguru (a yogi, mystic and visionary).
I figured that the first thing we need to do is get some positive energies flowing within ourselves. Once we’ve started to feel good inside, it is much easier to change our perspective on the day and make it a happy day.
So, here I am sharing my 5 rituals to be happy daily:
- Wake Up and Be Grateful
If you wake up alive today, be thankful for another day gifted to you! Practise GRATITUDE. Start your day by appreciating what you have in life – a roof under your head, food to eat, clothes to wear, your loved ones and many more. If you ever feel that something is bothering you and you are not happy, write a journal about the things that are troubling you and at the same time write down the things that you are grateful for in your life. When you do this, you will be more conscious about what your real troubles are and this gives you a better framework of mind to work your problems with a calmer and positive attitude.
- Practise Deep Breathing and Yoga
It is said that deep breathing and yoga is s a self healing therapy that can help us reduce stress and calm the mind and the body.
Breathe out all of the negativity of today and breathe in the ability to find clarity and positivity. Take a few moments in your precious day to close your eyes and to be simply present in the moment. Breathe by inhaling deeply through your right nostril for a count of four, and then exhaling from your left nostril for another count of four. Practise this for two minutes and you can work your way up to five minutes. A regular daily practice of deep breathing is one of the best tools for improving your overall health and well-being.
Note: You can also practise other types of breathing exercises as a part of your daily routine.
Some form of stretching or workout is great for our body. Even just a 10 – 15 minutes morning yoga routine goes a long way to our system. It enters the mind, balances the body, and jolts you awake with more positive and lasting energy for the day. So, do yourself a favour and try devoting just 15 minutes per day for starters to give some love for your body! Trust me, a little goes a long way.

The best things in life are free. SMILE is one of them! It may sound silly and simplistic, but there are actual benefits behind smiling. Smile is a powerful antidote for stress and it is actually proven to make us feel better. Not only does a grin instantaneously boost your level of happiness, research has shown that smiling at strangers can help them feel more connected. Remember that bad moods and negative emotions are impermanent, so why not smile more and make yourself and others happy!
- Connect with the nature
Being stuck inside the home or office all day can actually make a bad day even worse. A little change of environment can help us feel better and see a situation in a new and brighter perspective. Take a stroll in the park, read a book and get yourself exposed to some sun and connect to energy of the nature.
“HEALING WITH EARTHING” – It is said that the practise of “Grounding” (the practice of exposing yourself to the ground with your bare feet) helps in improving immune systems, boosting energy and lowering stress, in turn stimulating happiness.
During your free time or even lunch break, find a grassy spot where you can allow your feet to rest in the grass. Get some sun (Vitamin D), read a book/ magazine and zone out, even if it’s just for a few minutes of your day.
- Do something different or Learn something new
Most of us are stuck with our everyday busy lifestyle and we often forget that doing something different or learning something new can actually make us happy. Break out of your routine and mix things up! It can be as simple as taking up a new hobby, trying a new recipe, reading a book, painting or even walking down a different street. For me, I found that dancing and gardening was an outlet from my daily routine, and it helped me express my emotions and it increased my feel good hormones. The digital world offers us numerous ways to learn things fast and on the go. So, if you don’t know where to start, just go to YouTube or Pinterest and type in something you are interested in such as “DIY” or “Healthy Recipes”, you’re sure to find something new and exciting to try.
